Ukraine were denied automatic Euro 2024 qualification at Italy’s expense after a controversial late penalty decision.
The sides were tied at 0-0 as Monday’s final qualifying game in Leverkusen entered stoppage time when Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk collapsed in the area after a challenge by Bryan Cristante.
Referee Jesus Gil Manzano waved away Ukraine’s vehement appeals for a penalty and the decision was not overturned by the Video Assistant Referee, despite Cristante not appearing to play the ball.
